Episode 62: The Food & Culture of Bali, with Janet de Neefe

Bali. If you think it's just a party destination for backpackers, then this episode might surprise you, as we peel back the layers and uncover the real Bali, with Australian-born Ubud resident Janet de Neefe.

Janet first visited the island more than 30 years ago, falling in love with it, and a Balinese man who would become her husband. She has totally immersed herself in her adopted country, having four children and even giving up her Australian citizenship to become Indonesian.

Janet has written of her fascinating life in Bali in two deliciously food-centric books; "Fragrant Rice" and "Bali: The Food of my Island Home" (you can also find a recipe for Janet's delicious chicken curry here).

She and husband Ketut own a guesthouse, cooking school and bakery in Ubud and Janet is also the founder and director of both the annual Ubud Food Festival and the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival.

In this episode of ExtraVirgin, Janet shares her love for Bali and gives her top tips on what and where to eat and how to find the real Bali.
